Techniques for Elk Hunting -

Big-game hunters enjoy elk hunting because it is very challenging. Hunting elk is very difficult. No matter how experienced you are, it is necessary to plan your hunts when you have time. Otherwise you might have a tuff hunt on your hands.

Preparation: Elks usually live in high altitude. If you are interested in elk hunting it will help to be in good shape. You need to cover great distance on foot. At times you may need to run  while carrying a heavy pack. Other than being in good shape, regular walking and running can aid in elk hunting. If possible practice walking with extra weight. This effort is sure to pay off when hunting season comes.

Calling: One of the most popular methods of elk hunting is calling. You can use a social mew or a cow mew deepening on if you are hunting a male or female. Usually bulls, cows, elks and calves respond to social mew or cow mew. If they are in a group they may not respond to anything. However, calling can easily draw mature elks especially during the rut.

Scent: You can also use scents to attract elk. Scents work best immediately before and after the rut. A doe-in-estrus scent can work well for drawing an elk but the best scent you can use is a cow-in-estrus scent.

Decoys: Another popular method of attracting elks is to place decoys wallow or trail. Using calls and scents along with decoy will increase your chances ten fold.
